Having Regional Hyperthermia at Tokyo Clinic
What is “Regional Hyperthermia”?
Regional hyperthermia heats an area of your body using 8 Mega Hertz radio waves. The machine has a thermo-simulator to control and maintain the temperature. It also has a water-cooling system to keep you comfortable.
Hyperthermia usually causes very little pain or side effects. Some patients even read or sleep during the treatment. However you may feel some uncomfortable heat or pain depending on the bone structure and fat distribution in your body. If you feel any pain or are uncomfortable please tell the medical technologist straight away.
If you’re having other treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, your doctor at Tokyo Clinic will schedule your hyperthermia for the day that helps your other treatment(s) work best.
What happens during regional hyperthermia?
You will have hyperthermia in the Thermotron RF-8 machine. It is not a closed-in machine like a CT scanner, so you can feel relaxed. It is not noisy like an MRI scanner.
The therapy takes 40 minutes. You will be asked to arrive early. Please arrive at the correct time because if you’re late you can’t have the full 40-minute session.
The medical technologist will give you hospital clothes and show you where to get changed.
The medical technologist will check your temperature, your blood pressure and your oxygen level, if necessary. Please tell the medical technologist if you have any pain in your body or any other problem.
You will lie down on a bed. The medical technologist will adjust the machine to suit your body and the area being treated. The medical technologist will apply a special gel to the machine to make a good connection, this can help prevent pain and discomfort.
If you feel any pain or are uncomfortable please tell the medical technologist straight away. The medical technologist will adjust the machine, apply more gel or reduce the temperature if necessary.
